The organization: SunFarmer is a US nonprofit that incubates and launches locally-run solar businesses in developing countries. Our first business is SunFarmer Nepal, a solar energy business that designs and installs world class solar energy systems for hospitals, businesses, and farms. Since January 2014, SunFarmer Nepal has installed more than 150 solar energy systems in 10 districts in Nepal. 

SunFarmer plans to replicate this model by identifying promising entrepreneurs in other developing countries, and spending 12-18 months co-creating a solar business with each entrepreneur. Once the business launches, we’ll provide entrepreneurs with the financial, technical, and startup resources they need to be successful. Our goal is to launch 4 businesses by 2019.

We currently re-invest any profits in-country; eventually, we will use a portion of profits to offset costs of the US nonprofit. 

Duties and responsibilities: We are looking for a highly experienced grant consultant that can work with us on a project basis to apply to major grants and awards, including ones issued by USAID, EU, and other funding sources. Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the full grant writing process from start to finish
  • Leverage connections in fund-raising world to identify and vet appropriate grant opportunities, and make sure that SunFarmer is an appropriate match
  • Craft message that is highly tailored to the granting organization
  • Lead project management and collection of all necessary materials to apply for grants on time

Other requirements

  •  Bachelor’s degree in from a leading university

  • Professional experiencing and track record of successfully applying for grants

  • Existing network in funding community

Junior solar engineer

Position: Full-time

Location: SunFarmer head office in Sanepa, Kathmandu. Some travel to project sites will be expected.

Our team is small and consists of some of the leading solar engineers in Nepal. We are motivated by our desire to help solve Nepal’s energy crisis. Our office is fast-paced and high performing, but we also like to have fun together.

Our head office is in New York, USA and was started by experienced solar energy experts that have led over $1 billion USD in solar energy installations. We have connections to leading solar energy companies around the world, and our plan is to eventually replicate our work in Nepal in other developing countries.

Duties and responsibilities: We are currently looking for a Junior Solar Engineer to join our rapidly expanding solar engineering team. The candidate will report directly to our Engineering Manager, and will be expected to serve a key role on our engineering and project management teams. Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate and test new solar energy and electrical technologies
  • Conduct detailed energy audits at project sites to prepare for solar energy system design. Must be able to recognize electrical system related to wiring, safety, earthing, load balancing, etc.
  • Assist in design institutional solar energy systems for hospitals, schools, and businesses
  • Assist in overseeing of complex solar energy systems. Help manage contractors, vendors, customers
  • Complete detailed reports and documentation regarding solar energy system. Create troubleshooting manuals and processes to ensure project success
  • Complete various projects requiring knowledge of Computer Aided Drawing software (Autocad etc.)

Must-have characteristics:

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or Google SketchUp, in both 2D and 3D
  • Proficiency with microcontroller programming and hardware (ex., Atmel, Arduino , Raspberry Pi) as well as web programming
  • Ability to understand complex electrical drawings
  • Good working knowledge of solar energy
  • Bachelor’s degree in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • At least 1 year of professional experience
  • Fluent in English and Nepali
  • Strong communication skills
  • 2-wheeler license
  • Proficient with MS Office package and Internet research
  • Willingness to travel to project sites
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, a team player and a efficient and hard worker

Nice-to-have characteristics:

  • Proficiency with PVsyst and HOMER
  • Familiarity with Solar PV installation
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution system / LT panel
  • Knowledge about communication system like Ethernet, RS 485, Serial communication

Monitoring and evaluation officer

Duties and responsibilities: We are currently looking for a Monitoring & Evaluation Officer to join our rapidly expanding Operations Team. The candidate will report directly to our Operations Manager, and will be expected to perform a key customer facing role. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure that all SunFarmer customers and partners receive the best customer experience they've ever had
  • Collect project impact data and prepare insights reports for the SunFarmer team and marketing initiatives
  • Collect and analyze system performance data in regular intervals to identify product improvement opportunities
  • Call customers regularly to ensure product performance and customer satisfaction
  • Identify common issues and develop suitable solutions to handle inquiries in a timely manner
  • Understand the basics of a solar systems to ensure all customer concerns are dealt with successfully
  • Develop and maintain a strong professional relationship with the Engineering team to troubleshoot technical issues faced by the customers
  • Manage and prioritize a high volume of internal and external inquires via email and phone
  • Recognize fragile customers or situations need to be escalated to management

Monitoring and evaluation Intern

Position: Full-time

Location: Select earthquake-affected districts and remote districts across Nepal

Duties and responsibilities: We are currently looking for a Monitoring and Evaluation Intern (M&E Interns) to conduct the baseline surveys for an international health project in select districts of Nepal. The M&E Intern will report jointly to the Project Manager and M&E Officer. You will be a key member of the SunFarmer Nepal Operations team, and will lead professionally rewarding M&E activities on successful completion of comprehensive M&E training provided by SunFarmer. Successful interns will be considered for full-time employment at SunFarmer Nepal. Responsibilities include:

●      Represent SunFarmer in collaborating with the system installer teams, District Health Offices and local partners

●      Create contact list of key personnel at health facilities, District Health Offices, and district partners who potentially can assist with routine data collection

●      Conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection required for baseline surveys of health facility providers of 130 health facilities in Nepal

●      Assist in creation of district-wise baseline data by collecting logbook data from each health facilities from each districts

●      Provide routine written updates to the Project Manager on the progress

●      Prepare individual field visit reports based on the experience and formal/informal interactions with various stakeholders

●      Digitize all gathered data from various sources in predefined database

●      Prepare an end report in team recommending ways to increase efficiency and effectiveness of M&E activities

Other requirements

●      Recent university graduate or students in their senior year of studies from a leading university

●      Major in Public Health or relevant degree in health education is preferred but not required

●      Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills (both in English and Nepali)

●      Experience in designing, conducting and analyzing field research

●      Knowledge in quantitative and qualitative data analysis  

●      Must have both analytic skills as well as very strong writing skills

●      Willingness to travel to project sites
